The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everyone, or THUG LIFE. This acronym was made popular by rapper 2Pac, but what does it really mean? I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I knew, because I didn’t. But this movie really gave me a new perspective on things, a perspective I apparently needed.
There is a very powerful dialogue in this movie between Starr and her uncle (Common). It’s about the way police officers approach people of color and how they approach white people. It’s crazy to think that somehow it’s become normal that we treat those as two different scenarios. Because they shouldn’t be.
Starr (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) by a white police officer. And because Starr is the only witness to this crime, there is a lot of pressure on her to find her voice. But with treats from the King Lords, Starr is put in a difficult situation.
